GORDON BROWN PRAISES CARLING CUP
Posted on: 25.02.2010
The political world has united to congratulate The Football League on the success of The League Cup as preparations continue ahead of the 50th Final at Wembley this Sunday.
The 2010 Carling Cup Final between Aston Villa and Manchester United marks half a century since the competition was created by former Football League Secretary Alan Hardaker as part of the 'Pattern for Football' document.
And in recognition, cross-party MPs, Parliament and the Prime Minister Gordon Brown have commended the competition for the impact it has had on football as well as its power to connect with fans.
Gordon Brown said: "Congratulations to The Football League on reaching this important milestone. For 50 years the League Cup has been crucial to the fabric of professional football in England and Wales and the financial welfare of clubs.
"This season's competition has been one of the best in recent memory and I very much look forward to a fantastic Final - and the next 50 years of this competition."
The praise from the Prime Minister was echoed by Parliament following the tabling of an Early Day Motion (EDM) this week.
To date, 20 MPs from across all points on the political spectrum have pledged their support by signing the EDM which acknowledges this significant landmark in the history of The League Cup.
Tabled by Alan Keen MP for Feltham and Heston, the EDM "recognises that no other competition is as effective in spreading football's wealth through the professional game in England and Wales," and "hopes fans of both Aston Villa and Manchester United enjoy the historic Carling Cup Final".
The EDM reads in full:
"That this House congratulates The Football League on the fiftieth year of The League Cup competition; recognises that no other competition is as effective in spreading football's wealth throughout the professional game in England and Wales; notes the increased interest in this year's competition, including increased attendances; and hopes fans of both Aston Villa and Manchester United enjoy the historic Carling Cup Final at Wembley on 28th February".
