Tuesday, February 20, 2007 QPR Goalkeeping Coach, Tony Roberts Reportedly Suspended- [Roberts remained listed on the Club's Staff page]
Daily Mail - Charles Sale Keeper coach out in QPR soap opera There has been yet more turmoil at Queens Park Rangers, the Championship club careering out of control, with goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts being suspended by manager John Gregory, who gave no reason for his decision. Roberts, who has been at Loftus Road for more than 20 years as player and coach, was told to leave the club without warning by Gregory, whose own position has been a matter of speculation, after a training session last Sunday.
It is believed that Gregory’s action is in some way related to the departure a week earlier of QPR press manager Jackie Bass, who has been the live-in girlfriend of Roberts since last April. Bass, barred by Gregory from the dressing room areas of the training ground and the stadium earlier this season, is known to be consulting lawyers over the way the club released her. There has been talk of an unfair dismissal claim, possibly including allegations of sexual discrimination.
Bass also felt her job had been made untenable on the administrative side. It might have been felt by the under-pressure Gregory that any claim of this nature would make it difficult for Roberts to remain within his inner circle at QPR. The soap opera that is QPR has included an alleged hold-up at the club of chairman Gianni Paladini by seven men who were cleared of various charges, the mass brawl against a China team and the yearly accounts lodged at Companies House differing by millions of pounds from the figures approved by shareholders. Wednesday, March 14, 2007 Interview with Gianni Paladini in The London Paper, March 14, by Matt Butler
"Face to Face: Gianni Paladini"[re John Gregory]: "...If he doesn't keep us up then the fans won't be happy and...we'll have to look at that when the time comes..." [re Former Press Secretary, Jackie Bass] "John told Jackie she wasn't allowed to go into the changing rooms. The players are in there walking around sometimes with no clothes on. It doesn't look right. Anyway she resigned, it's no big deal.." re Tony Roberts: "The reason was that we had three goalkeepers and a coach. There may have been something else going on, but John's got his staff and he decides who he wants and who he doesn't.."qprreport.blogspot.com/2007/03/chairman-paladini-interviewedspeaks.html

2004 Tony Roberts Testimonial Match Report FULL TIME: RANGERS 1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 3 Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004 A near perfect summer evening saw Premiership side Charlton Athletic triumph by three goals to one in the Rs' last friendly before the start of the new campaign.
Both teams looked sharp as the heat of the day cooled off, but in the end it was Charlton's Premiership class that dictated the final result.
Rangers took the lead with a blaster from Kevin Gallen, but Charlton responded immediately through Julian Grey, and second half goals from Sean Bartlett and Jason Euell sealed a 3-1 victory for the visitors.
Charlton, playing in a changed all yellow strip, had the best of the early chances. Sean Bartlett forced Rangers keeper Chris Day into action, as early as the second minute, with a sharp strike that the Rangers stopper did well to tip over.
Tommy Williams was a welcome return to QPR's starting line up. Having spent last season on loan from Birmingham, he has returned on a one month loan. And it was a Williams free kick in the fourth minute which brought the Rangers fans to their feet.
His searching free kick found Danny Shittu unmarked at the far post and the big defender swept the ball home. Unfortunately the goal was disallowed with Shittu deemed offside.
Midway through the half Ian Holloway made a change bringing Paul Furlong on for Richard Pacquette. Kevin Gallen then immediately capitalised on a sleepy Charlton defence, firing Rangers in to a 25th minute lead. Last season's joint top scorer held off his defender, before beating the outstretched arm of Simon Royce in the Charlton goal from 20 yards out.
But Charlton's response was swift. Sean Beartlett forced a fine goal line save from Chris Day, only for Julian Gray to find the back of the net from close range in the 26th minute.
Rangers saw the last action of the first half, with Richard Langley's crowd pleasing run and cross applying pressure at the heart of the Addicks defence. But both sides departed at the interval satisfied with their half's work.
Rangers started the second half brightly forcing an early corner. Unfortunately Danny Shittu was again unable to convert, sending the ball wide. Charlton's best early chance of the half came from Jason Euell, who struggeled to hold off Tommy Williams. The Rangers defender did enough to pressure the Addick's front man, sending his shot wide.
Charlton then turned on the heat after emerging unscathed from a period of well sustained Rangers pressure. The crowd greeted a number of substitutions, Dennis Oli coming on for Steve Palmer and trialist Christopher Kanu for Carlisle.
But it was Sean Bartlett who capitalised for the Addicks. Scott Parker took advantage of some lax Rangers defending, playing in Bartlett who gave Charlton a 63rd minute lead.
A 70th minute Langley free kick almost levelled the scores for QPR - his 25 yard shot going just wide of Royce's upright. But it was Euell who was looking the most dangerous of the strikers on the night, forcing a fine 71st minute double save from Chris Day in the QPR goal.
And it was Euell who would eventually seal the win for the Premiership side. Jon Fortune's long ball picked out Euell 25 yards out from goal, and the in form striker hit an audacious lob, beating the Rangers keeper.
A string of late substitution followed: Rowlands for Ainsworth, Daly for Bean, and Sabin for Furlong, which broke up the game in the dying minutes. But it was the substitute appearance of QPR Goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts in the 87th minute, whose testimonial match this was, that brought the crowd to their feet

"Roberts also holds the record for the only goalkeeper ever to be sent off in the FA Cup in the opposing area when he was red carded after a clash with Peter Clarke during a 5–2 defeat to Southend United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup on 5 January 2008."
