Bump/Edit - 49 Years Ago Today...
February 19, 1974
One of the great QPR games: QPR played Coventry at Loftus Road in the replay of the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. With a couple of QPR players injured;moving into injury time with extra time set. A free kick to QPR. Stan Bowles took it. Ball in the net. Final Whistle blew immediately: QPR 3 Coventry 2.
QPR moved into the Quarter Final of the FA Cup for the first time, where they had a seemingly relatively easy draw against Leicester City....Unfortunately...!
The QPR team: Parkes - Hazell Mclintock Mancini Clement - Venables Leach Francis, Thomas Bowles Givens.

Manchester United played their first match at Old Trafford and lost 3-4 to Liverpool. Sandy Turnbull, United's inside-forward who was later killed during the First War, scored the first goal. The club had previously played at Bank Street in the Clayton area of Manchester.

Bob Benson, Arsenal full-back, collapsed during their wartime match against Reading and died in the dressing room. He had not played since April 1915 when the League programme had been abandoned. Originally with Sheffield United he won one cap for England against Ireland in 1913 and moved to Arsenal later that year.

Eric Gemmell, Oldham Athletic centre-forward, transferred to Crewe Alexandra. He began with Manchester City but did not make their League team and moved to Oldham in 1947. Was their top scorer with 24 goals in 27 matches in 1952-53 when they won the Third Division North and in January 1952 got seven of his side's eleven against Chester. Had scored 121 goals at Boundary Park (110 in the League) but could not reproduce the form for Crewe and left them for Rochdale after 5 goals in 15 games. Retired from League football in the summer of 1956 with a total of 147 goals in 273 appearances.
19 February 1958
Special dispensation from the F.A. allowed Stan Crowther to appear for Manchester United in the Cup after he had already appeared for Aston Villa in the competition that season. United had, of course, lost eight of their players in the Munich Air Disaster. Crowther won a Cup winners medal the previous season with Villa when they beat United 2-1 and went on to appear in the 1958 Final for United when they were again beaten; this time by Bolton Wanderers.
19 February 1965
Luton Town signed Leyton Orient inside-forward Ted Phillips. Began with Ipswich Town in 1952 and, after a season's loan to Stowmarket, was their top scorer with 42 goals in 1956-57 when they won the Third Division South Championship. He later won medals in both the Second and First Divisions with the club. Scored 161 goals in 269 League appearances before joining Orient in March 1964 during their unhappy season of First Division football. Scored 17 goals in a year at Brisbane Road before his move to Luton. Following a dispute with the Bedfordshire side he moved to Colchester United with whom he stayed until he retired in May 1966 having scored a total of 199 League goals.
19 February 1977
England and Liverpool player Kevin Keegan signs for SV Hamburg in Germany. The fee of £ 500,000 makes him the most expensive English player.
