Chester's Blue Square Premier match at Forest Green this evening was called off just over two hours before kick-off after the visitors' playing staff reportedly refused to fulfil the fixture.
The club have allegedly failed to pay their squad in full for the past three months and BBC Sport reports that the club's players refused to board the team coach for tonight's game.
"Negotiations had been going on all day," Chester's former managing director Rob Gray said. "But, in the end, we'd no option but to say we could not fulfil the fixture."
A statement on the Forest Green website confirmed the postponement, saying: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the club was notified at 5.11pm that this evening's Blue Square Premier fixture against Chester City has been called off.
"The club are taking steps to liaise with all our usual media contacts to notify them of the circumstances, however we would like to take this opportunity to apologise to all our sponsors and supporters for the late cancellation."
In a statement the Football Conference confirmed it will open an investigation into the last-minute postponement: "Chester notified both Forest Green and the Football Conference that they were unable to fulfil the fixture due to insufficient players being available.
"The Football Conference will issue a further statement after their investigation into this matter is concluded."
Chester, who are up for sale for £1, started the season with a 25-point deduction in the Conference standings and have until 10 March to ward off a winding-up order by paying £26,125 to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs.
