York City: Richard Pacquette interview
STRIKING IT RICH: York City’s Richard Pacquette (left) was on target in midweek
01 February 2010
Look at Richard Pacquette's football CV and you could be forgiven for thinking it was an a-z of non-league football – when you take out first club QPR and short spells at MK Dons and Brentford that is. And he's only 27.
There have a ctually been 17 clubs and counting, but the striker is adamant he's no journeyman and he hopes Tuesday night's FA Trophy winner against Newport County is the catalyst of more good things to come at KitKat Crescent.

Emerging through the youth ranks at Loftus Road, Paddington-born Pacquette eventually departed QPR for MK Dons back in September 2004, loan spells at Stevenage, Dagenham & Redbridge and Mansfield coming in between.

Since then Fisher Athletic, Brentford, Farnborough, Stevenage, St Albans City, Hemel Hempstead, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Worthing, Havant & Waterlooville and Maidenhead United have all featured on his teams sheet. And there have been brief loan spells at Thurrock and Histon to boot.

Eight months down the line from his switch to York last May, Pacquette is now enjoying a relative period of stability, though injuries, suspensions and the blinding form of City's other three key forwards have limited him to only a handful of starts.

However, Pacquette was the name on everyone's lips when netting a dramatic late winner against Newport this week and the targetman hopes his divine intervention is a sign of things to come.

Asked how many clubs he has now played for, Pacquette laughed: "I've lost count myself. At one stage it looked like I was a little bit of a journeyman going from club to club but I think it was when I was at Havant that I had my most settled seasons.
"I had three seasons, three-and-a-half seasons and then I went to Maidenhead and I only went on loan to Histon last season because of the financial situation at Maidenhead. Apart from that I would have stayed but I am just happy to be back in full-time football, doing what I do best and enjoying it."
Pacquette's undoubted career highlight came when giving lowly Havant a shock lead against Liverpool at Anfield during an FA Cup fourth round tie in January 2008, though the Reds recovered to record a 5-2 victory.
Two years on it is in the FA Trophy where he has made his mark and while it may not compare to scoring at the fortress in Merseyside, the forward admits Tuesday's winner was still a welcome tonic.
"I was happy because I have been waiting for a start for a long time," said Pacquette, capped twice for the Dominica national football team.
"I have just had to train hard and concentrate on my play really.
"Obviously, it looked like the game was going to go to extra-time and my strike probably came at the right time."
Reflecting on his first half of the season, he added: "It's been a slow one really! But the team has done well so I can't grumble. I just have to be patient and wait for my chance.
"I was suspended at the start and then I played against Hayes, after which I got sent off and missed another three games.
"Then I came back and I got injured and I missed another three or four weeks – I pulled my quad in training before the Oxford home game.
"That was disappointing and because of the injury and things I haven't played properly but the team has played well.
"You've just got to be positive, keep your head down and keep plugging away.
"All the forwards, whoever has come in, have done well but the competition is good and it keeps everyone on their toes.
"That's why everyone who has come in has done well because they know what a fight they will have if they come out of the team.
"It's good for all parties really, we've got four good strikers."
Pacquette, Richard Brodie, Michael Gash and Michael Rankine are indeed giving manager Martin Foyle a much-wanted selection headache as the Minstermen show no signs of stopping in their push for the Football League.
Pacquette's contract expires at the end of the season and an 18th club may be on the horizon, but the front man has no desires to leave.
He is thriving on life at City and sharing a York lads pad with team-mates Neil Barrett, Alex Lawless, James Meredith and Daniel Parslow.
He has rarely been happier, with a regular starting berth the only thing that's missing.
But whether he continues to make the Minstermen first XI or not, Pacquette feels his 10th season as a professional could well be one in which the champagne corks are popping.
"I'm settled, I'm happy, all the boys are great and it's quite a tight-knit club," he said. "That makes it easier as well and I'm enjoying it.
"The house is quality and that's brought the club together as well. We're all like family now.
"Hopefully, I can just keep working hard and when I get my chances take them. Hopefully, I'll play a part in winning us promotion.
"I think we've got a good chance. We've got a good squad and if we keep doing the right things and keep doing what we are doing, I reckon we'll go all the way."
