Ben Watson is hoping his form since returning from a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers has been enough to persuade Roberto Martinez he has a future at Latics.
The 24-year-old spent the first half of the campaign at Loftus Road to keep up his match sharpness, and has certainly made his mark since being back at the DW.
After a lively late cameo in the FA Cup third-round romp over Hull, he rescued Wigan with the late equaliser at Notts County last weekend to keep them on the Wembley trail.
And Watson is keeping his fingers crossed his form has caught the eye of Martinez as he attempts to prove he is good enough to hold down a regular place in the Latics team.
He told the Evening Post: "Obviously I want to play more at Wigan, and that is what I'll be going all out to do between now and the end of the season.
"My target now for the rest of the year is to get into the Wigan team and stay there.
"I have spoken to the gaffer about it since I got back, and it's all down to me now.
"I have to work as hard as I can and we'll see what happens.
"My priority is to stay here and play here. I enjoy it here and I just want to play here."
Watson found himself surplus to requirements last summer after Martinez swooped for midfielders Mohamed Diame, Hendry Thomas, Scott Sinclair, Jordi Gomez and James McCarthy within weeks of taking charge.
But he ensured he remained on Wigan's radar with a string of top-notch performances with the Hoops that had the Londoners exploring the possibility of taking him on a permanent basis.
Watson said: "I got exactly what I wanted out of the loan move. The aim was to play games, and that's what I did.
"I played every minute of every game I was available for, and I was delighted with that.
"I really enjoyed my time there, and I think you do enjoy yourself a lot more when you are playing regularly. It's what you get paid to do.
"The challenge now is to take that into the second half of the season with Wigan.
"All I want to do is play football. I'm coming off the bench at the moment but my aim is to get back into the team. If I keep working hard in training and doing what I have been doing since I've been back, hopefully I can force my way into the starting XI."
