Gazette - Vine set for Rangers stay
Jan 28 2010 By Paul Warburton
ROWAN Vine is staying at QPR - because his new boss wants to prove why he brought him to west London in the first place.
It was Mick Harford who set up a permanent deal for the £2.5million striker (right) when the coach was Rangers boss first time around in October 2007 and - although Patrick Agyemang has gone to Bristol City for the rest of the season - Vine is going nowhere.
Crystal Palace are understood to have made an enquiry for Vine before they went into administration on Tuesday, but Harford confirmed he wants to give the player he first teamed up with at Luton every opportunity to stake a claim in W12.
And to prove it, he gave the 27-year-old the last 20 minutes as a sub in the 5-0 drubbing at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
Harford said: "Rowan is flying in training. He’s not ready for 90 minutes, but he’s recovered nicely from a clean-up operation on scar tissue affecting his groin, and he’s beginning to look sharp."
Rangers’ third manager this campaign only had five games in charge in 2007 before making way for Lugi de Canio.
But during his 2007 spell, Harford secured Vine from Birmingham on loan, a deal that became permanent in the next transfer window.
Vine then suffered a double leg break in April 2008, and has been fighting to fully recover ever since. But it’s a mark of the esteem he’s held in by Harford that Vine is seen as a better bet than a fully-fit Agyemang.
Harford added: "Rowan fits the bill of target man, and he’ll be given the chance to show what he can do."
